Ayam penyet is Indonesian — more precisely East Javanese cuisine — fried chicken dish consisting of fried chicken that is smashed with the pestle against mortar to make it softer, served with sambal, slices of cucumbers, fried tofu and tempeh - Wikipedia

Who doesn’t love Ayam Penyet? I’ve never met anyone who said that they don’t like Ayam Penyet. So, thank me later because I’m about to tell you where you can get the two best ayam penyet in Kuala Lumpur!

AYAM BAKAR WONG SOLO

Address: 57, Jalan Raja Alang, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

This restaurant is in Kampung Baru, the urban village where a lot of great small restaurants are located. Do not worry about the cleanliness of the food, Wong Solo is a well-known name and this restaurant is one of its branches. Thus, they are really particular about the hygiene of the food and the place itself.

People would thought that the best dish in this restaurant is ayam bakar, but you’re wrong! Their ayam penyet is the best. I can say that this is the best place to eat ayam penyet.

One set of ayam penyet is RM10.90. It comes with rice, fried tempeh, fried tofu, eggplant sambal, cucumber, and a mineral water. Their sambal is very spicy, so if you’re not a spicy person, I suggest you to ask the waiter to separate the sambal from the chicken if you don’t want to get sweaty while eating.

Another thing that I like about this place is not only the food, but the feel of the restaurant. While eating at this restaurant, I felt as if I’m truly in Indonesia because of the Indonesia-inspired furniture and all of the waiters wear batik uniform which made it a more unique dining experience.

However, bear in mind that Kampung Baru is a very crowded place. Do expect that you’ll get trapped in traffic while reaching to the Ayam Bakar Wong Solo.

WAROENG PENYET

Address: NU Sentral, L4-08, Level 4 Lot 4.08, 201, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields, 50470 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur

If you’re looking for a place that’s easier to reach via public transport, Waroeng Penyet in Nu Sentral is a great place to eat decent ayam penyet. It’s a self-service restaurant without any Indonesian elements other than the Indonesian food.

One set of ayam penyet is RM13.90 which comes with rice and soft drinks. Their ayam penyet dish is quite similar to the one at Ayam Bakar Wong Solo except that they replace the eggplant with crunchy cabbage, which I love.

At this place, they have 5 types of sambal that you can choose from the super spicy sambal to sweet sambal. The combination of the super spicy sambal with sweet sambal is the best when you eat their ayam penyet. Best thing about this place is not only about the chicken itself, but the fresh vegetables that they serve together with then chicken. I’ve been to this place many times and I was never disappointed with the freshness of the food.

One thing to note, you might want to avoid coming here during lunch time because it will be too packed with people.

To conclude, these two places are the best place to eat Ayam Penyet in Kuala Lumpur. They are both affordable, clean, delightful, and the services have never disappoint me! I’ve tried ayam penyet at other places in Kuala Lumpur, but I’ve had the best at Ayam Bakar Wong Solo and Waroeng Penyet.
