SEPANG: There was an air of disbelief when the reversal of roles between the now, former government, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) Malaysia’s opposition party following the results of the 14th general election (GE14) on the 9th of May.

Barisan Nasional initially celebrated their success with the earlier announcement of seats won when an elusive triumph of the party was displayed all over social media.

The euphoria turned to despair when PH won 122 of the 222 parliamentary seats at stake, paving the way for a change in the government since our nation gained independence from the British in 1957.

Although results of the GE14 were expected to be announced officially on the same day of the voting at 8 p.m., there were unforeseen delays which caused the announcement of change in government to be announced at 4 in the morning the next day, 10th of May 2018.

At the moment, Malaysia will once again be led by former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had ruled from 1981 to 2003 making him the longest-serving prime minister in the nation.

Although the nation is still riddled with shock at the results, Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun, 59, said Malaysians should accept the results with an open heart as they are the outcome of their collective decision.

Malaysians have been urged to be “gentlemanly” and accept the results of the 14th General Election, even if it doesn’t fall in their favour.

Following a decisive victory for Pakatan Harapan in the 2018 election, Mahathir will be sworn-in as Prime Minister on 10th of May 2018. At 92, he will be the world's oldest head of government.
