Francis Lawrence’s spy thriller, Red Sparrow, is based on the novel of the same title by Jason Matthews, who seemingly knows something about what goes on in the world of spy versus spy because he, himself is a former C.I.A. officer. This has caused the audiences to demand for some realistic experience and some spice that will keep our heart racing throughout the movie (after all it is a thriller). Desperate expectation of wanting it to be a really good movie has caused Red Sparrow suffers from the fate — when you are looking for applause, just fine starts to seem bad. It is undeniable that the casts for this movie have outstanding acting skills and it has been proven by the classy lift that they have given but depending solely on the casts, does not entirely take off.

This is because the movie feels flat and off except for the twist ending. Director Francis fails to give the audience the intensity of a spy movie but we cannot deny the opening scene when Jennifer Lawrence performs as a professional ballet dancer really give the ‘wow’ factor to those who are watching. He also does include all of the intense sex and violence scenes where Jennifer almost got rape when she is in the ‘whore’ school and also when Joel Edgerton skin is being peel off layer by layer but we cannot ignore that the level of intelligence and ‘spiciness’ in Red Sparrow does not reach the level of classic all-in spy movies.

Despite the bad adaptation, as mentioned earlier the casts have successfully delivered the characters especially the Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence who played Dominika Egorova which is the lead. One of the challenges that she has to overcome is the Russian accent and she does that flawlessly in Red Sparrow. Ms. Lawrence and every other casts have nailed it hard on meeting the movie’s physical demands especially during the ballet and torture scenes. All in all, Lawrence delivers typically excellent work and this is what the audiences can look forward to while watching this movie.

Jennifer Lawrence is best known in the Hunger Games series as a teenage survivalist turned to be a face of revolution – Katniss Everdeen. That character is a perfect practice for her to prepare a play rough character which makes her a perfect fit when her character in Red Sparrow brutally twists in a knife. Crafts and sexiness are part of what differentiate Katniss Everdeen to this role, Dominika Egorova, as well as her flawless Russian accent. It is her determination and certainty of becoming a sparrow and also an asset to the Russian enemy role that will carry you through Red Sparrow.

What precedes that overall, it helps the movie a little bit that Ms. Lawrence and all other great stars in the movie, can successfully pull off the characters that have been assigned for them. From the aspect of acting skills, the audiences will not be disappointed but if the audiences are going for the story adaption, I suggest that they rethink their precious time of two-hours and 19-minutes. For a spy thriller movie lover, the story is too familiar and does not have that much of surprise element except the ending is intriguing and has a little bit of a twist element.
