KUALA LUMPUR: As we all know, GE14 has been a historic election day ever in Malaysia. Now, Malaysia has a new government which is Tun Dr Mahathir Muhammad as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia who is also a chairman of Pakatan Harapan.

Pakatan Harapan won 122 of 222 parliamentary seats, resulting in Malaysia's first electoral transfer of power since independence in 1957. It has proven that Malaysians' voices have been heard and unity is very important. Now, we want to hear what UM students have to say about the results of GE 14.

UM students speak about what has happened during Malaysia election is a good wake up call to all of the politicians not only in Malaysia but all around the world and same goes to the government in the country that is practising democracy. The impact of unity has been proven to bring change but even though we do not know whether the change will be good or bad but at least it has changed and the first step has been taken. UM students speak:

“This is actually a good wake up call for all the leaders and governments all over the world that are practising democracy system”, Amira, 22.

“This is a new change. The results from this choice might be good or bad. But most importantly it will be different”, Lee Hong, 22.

“We have proven that when we are united, things can be changed. With a new government, that is our first step of change and we hope that our new government can keep on working towards the changes”, Khairunisa, 22.

“Malaysians chose Tun M because of his track record in the past. He is our ‘Bapa Pembangunan’ and Malaysians know that he can make Malaysia great again”, Shamani, 23.

Even though some people see this as a good thing, but some of the students think that changing the government is unnecessary. But instead Malaysia should replace the Prime Minister and not the whole government. This is because there are a lot of people in BN have done their duties so well. Some of them also speak that Pakatan Harapan consists of several parties merge into one. The new merge party has not proven how well they can work together because let’s not forget they all have different ideologies and come from various backgrounds.

“I think that we should not have changed the government but instead, we just have to change the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Najib”, Faizuddin, 21.

“A new government is a really big amount to gamble. Of course, we have Tun M to lead but the new party has not proven yet of how harmonized they can work together because they all have different ideologies”, Ah Wong, 23.

“It is so sad to see BN went down just because of one person. And people seem to forget that there are still a lot of people in BN who carried out their duties so well and excellent”, Syed, 21.
